Basic Structure
Dry Media
Fall (Aug-Dec), Beginning: B&W Drawing
A. Black and White Drawing: Beginning level Supplies provided: charcoal, graphite, black and white paper, adhesives, etc. General description (for both age groups): Students learn about light, line quality, and perception. Special emphasis is given to drawing what is seen rather than drawing either a generic memory or a short-hand version of something. This encourages students to leave comfort zones and to really look - very useful lessons for hand-eye coordination, motor skills and muscle memory. Basic structure applies. Fall (Aug-Dec), Intermediate: Color Drawing
B. Color Drawing: Intermediate level Supplies provided: color pencils, crayons, markers, color paper, etc. General description (for both age groups): Week 1 tackles ?monsters?. Week 2 explores color theory/terms. Week 3 looks at art history, comparing the same images in both color and b&w then using torn paper to mimic art-history examples. In Wk4, each student begins a drawing then passes it along to another student until class ends - students use all information taught over the past 3 wks to create and edit class compositions. Basic structure applies. Fall (Aug-Dec), Advanced: Printmaking
C. Printmaking: Advanced level (+ supply charge) Supplies provided: erasers, linoleum, cutting tools, wood, glass, ink, etc. General description (for both age groups): Week 1 replaces the ?monster? lesson with stamp-making exercises. In Week 2, the younger students continue stamp-making processes; the older students look at art-history examples of print for inspiration and begin drawing on linoleum. In Week 3, the younger students enjoy an art-history lesson; the older students begin cutting and printing linoleum. In Week 4, the younger students stick largely to finger-painting with washable ink on glass; the older students experiment with ink on glass to make prints. Basic structure applies.
Wet Media
Spring (Jan- May), Beginning: Oil Pastels
A. Oil Pastels: Beginning level Supplies provided: oil pastels, paper, etc. *Developmental differences are taken into account between age groups. For instance, the color relationships and techniques taught to the younger students are presented in a larger, simplified format, usually in the form of a color game. Most likely, the older students will already be familiar with many color basics. So they?ll be asked to take what they know and expand that knowledge by implementing a more sophisticated knowledge of color relationships into a still life using only one of the color relationships learned. At this level, students gain a concrete understanding of color theory basics as well as a solid foundation for painting to prepare them for the intermediate class. Oil pastels provide a great basis for painterly expression because of their ability to smudge and blend. Otherwise, this program follows the basic weekly structure.
Spring (Jan-May), Intermediate: Tempera/Acrylic Paint
B. Tempera/Acrylic Paint: Intermediate level Supplies provided: tempura and/or acrylic paints, brushes, trays, paper, etc. * Again, younger and older classes differ in the complexity and execution of projects but follow the same basic structure. For example: the younger students will study an artist such as Georgia O?Keeffe and use finger-painting techniques, while the older students will learn brush techniques from an artist who readily exemplifies brushwork in their work. In general, this course level focuses on painting as a process. The differences between a more controlled medium like those used for drawing will be discussed. A more experimental approach will be embraced, which allows the students more room to explore both the effects of brushwork and the overall different structures painting demands as opposed to the control that drawing allows. Students will then be adequately prepared for the advanced course in watercolor, which calls for a slower, more patient application. Basic structure applies.
Spring (Jan-May), Advanced: Watercolor
C. Watercolor: Advanced level (+ supply charge) Supplies provided: watercolor paints, watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, etc. * The younger students stick with watercolor crayons and pencils -this process involves drawing and smudging followed by the addition of water; additional techniques involving soap and sand will supplement their lessons. Older students will more thoroughly learn the slow, multi-layer techniques of watercolor. By Week 4, black-and-white will no longer be allowed to create darks and lights within compositions. Basic structure applies.
Dimensional Media
Summer (June-July) and during interim periods throughout the year, Beginning: Themed Craft
*These courses meet three times a week for two weeks. A. Seasonal /Themed Craft Projects: Beginning level These projects and their supplies will change regularly according to the time of year the class is offered. For more details, please check the website regularly: view our calendar online or dial 901.679.3543.
Summer (June-July), Intermediate: Collage
B. Collage: Intermediate level Supplies provided: magazines, adhesive, paper, scissors, some objects... endless possibilities! This course is heavy on composition. Students will question the boundaries of the edges, face dynamic space and color relationships, and eventually create ?environments? with collected materials. Basic structure applies.
Summer (June-July), Advanced: Mixed Media
C. Mixed Media: Advanced level (+ supply charge) Supplies provided: any and everything, students encouraged to bring in ?found objects?. Students will incorporate ?found objects? into multi-dimensional, multi-media creations. Imagination is key here. New environments and species that are fitting for such environments will be invented. Final project will be abstract. Some creative writing involved.
